LINK-AGE/LIFESPAN Workshop on "Data Handling for Biogerontology Research"
29-30 April 2010
Newcastle upon Tyne, UK

This two-day workshop will be hosted by Newcastle University's Centre for Integrated Systems Biology of Ageing and Nutrition to address a range of issues around the curation and management of the large volumes of data that are being generated in a range of projects on the biology of ageing. Many of these issues are generic across the life sciences.

The workshop (see below for Aims and Scope) will provide presentations, demonstrations, and hands-on tutorials for the data handling applications and integrated data analysis systems developed as part of CISBAN. There will also be opportunities for presentations from speakers from other groups.

Accommodation (maximum two nights) and meals will be paid by the organisers. Participants are expected to pay their own travel.

To register for the workshop please email Allyson Lister (a.l.lister@ncl.ac.uk<mailto:a.l.lister@ncl.ac.uk>). There is no deadline but places are limited in number and will be allocated on a first-come-first accepted basis.

Description of the Workshop Aims and Scope

Vast quantities of heterogeneous data are being produced within the life sciences. There is a need to integrate these diverse datasets to build a more systems-level view of the organisms under study. The datasets must also be archived, curated with appropriate metadata in widely-accepted formats, and made available in a suitable form for subsequent analysis, integration, and sharing.

There is an urgent need to provide tools and resources that allow the digital curation and management of scientific data in a fashion amenable to standardisation and to facilitate data sharing and discovery of knowledge. It is desirable that this data storage and annotation process is implemented as early as possible in the data management cycle to prevent data loss and ensure traceability throughout.

This 2-day workshop will provide presentations, demonstrations, and hands-on tutorials for the data handling applications and integrated data analysis systems developed as part of CISBAN. There will also be presentations from invited speakers from outside CISBAN. The CISBAN projects covered during this workshop can be used by other research groups who share the same goals of data archiving and sharing. We will be covering CISBAN's data archiving and sharing system (SyMBA), database of integrated probabilistic networks (CID), database of high-throughput robotic experiments (ROD), and application for annotating systems biology models with biological information (Saint). We will also discuss why and how data sharing and common data formats are important for all research groups.
