LINK-AGE : coordination and consolidation of European biogerontology: en route towards formation of a European college of biogerontology

Current EU funded projects

The Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7)

The FP7 has been launched in 2007 and will last till 2013. All information can be found in http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/home_en.html

Currently, there are 4 collaborative projects and two coordination action on ageing  financed under the FP7.

The Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP6) instruments
A succinct summary from http://ec.europa.eu/research/fp6/index_en.cfm?p=0_instruments

i) Integrated Project (IP- New Instrument)

Main purpose: to support the objective-driven research needed to generate the knowledge required to implement the priority themes: the primary deliverable is new knowledge.

ii) Network of Excellence (NoE- New Instrument)

Main purpose: to address the fragmentation of European research: the primary deliverable is the structuring and shaping of the way research is carried out in Europe on a particular topic in order to strengthen excellence in that topic

iii) Article 169

Purpose: to support research programmes undertaken jointly by several Member States and Associated States

iv) Specific Targeted Research Project (STREP)

Purpose: to support research, technological development and demonstration activities of a more limited scope and ambition than required by the integrated projects: the primary deliverable is new knowledge

v) Coordination Action (CA)

Purpose: to promote and support the networking and coordination of research and innovation activities;

vi) Specific Support Action (SSA)

Purpose: to support the implementation of the Framework Programme

The 6th Framework Program projects on ageing

Thanks to the financial effort for Research done by the European Commission, ageing research has been pursued and several projects on thematic linked to ageing studies have been developed starting in 2002. Integrated Projects include GEHA (genetics of healthy ageing), MIMAGE (involvement of mitochondria in ageing), PROTEOMAGE (proteomics and ageing) and CRESCENDO (nuclear factors and ageing).
CELLS_INTO_ORGANS (Functional genomics for development and disease of mesodermal organ systems- ageing diseases) and LIFESPAN (Development and ageing) are two networks of excellence and EWA (estrogens in ageing women), ELASTAGE (Elastic tissues in ageing), OSTEOGENE (molecular mechanisms of bone homeostasis- Osteoporosis) and ANABONOS (molecular mechanisms of bone formation and anabolism- Osteoporosis) are Specific Targeted research Project. LINK-AGE is a Coordination Action.

Other specific actions include the realisation of different types of conference on the ageing problematic as RIG, ECONAG and AGEACTION.

ERA-AGE is financed by a specific initiative - the ERA-NET Scheme - from the Sixth Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP6) aiming at "Integrating and Strengthening the European Research Area". More information on the ERA-NET scheme can be found here.
