Each
Topic Sub-Group aims the development of common research goals
and strategies.
Since
the ultimate goal of biogerontology research is knowledge that
can improve quality of life for older persons, a core aim of LINK-AGE
is to encourage and facilitate interspecies studies that help
identify differences and similarities between ageing processes
in different species, with particular reference ultimately to
humans.
In
previous work distinction has been made between ‘public’
mechanisms that have relevance across the species range and across
individuals within populations, and ‘private’ mechanisms
that may be specific to single species or to sub-sets of individuals
within populations.
Each
Topic Sub-Group will have in its terms of reference (whenever
appropriate) the need to address how interspecies studies can
advance understanding.
Additionally,
a Topic Sub-Group will be established specifically to address
opportunities for interspecies studies of ageing processes, to
maintain a database on resources held by LINK-AGE members and
associates, and to consider new initiatives that might lead to
breakthroughs through interspecies studies. The Research Topic Group on Interspecies comparison (chair person: Jacques Vanfleteren) took place together with the 2008 Research
Topic Group A,
just before the 6th European
Congress of Biogerontology, from 29/11 14h to 30/11 17h. Web site of the Congres
